Genisis 1-2 (oct. 11 2009)
Genisis 1 covers the story of the creations of the earth and the heavens. God did not need to create the universe; He chose to create it. Why? God is love, and love is best expressed toward something or someone else- so God created the world and people as an expression of his love. we learn much about God and ourselves throught the creation story, first we learn about god 1) He is creative; 2) as the creator he is distinct from his creation; 3) He is eternal and in control of all creation. Then we learn of ourselves 1) Since God chose to create us we are valuable in His eyes; 2) we are more important that the animals.
Genisis 2 covers the story of the creation of man in detail. "from the dust of the ground" implies that there is nothing fancy about the chemical elements making up our bodies. The body is a lifeless shell until God brings it alive with his "breath of life." When God removes his life giving breath we once again return to the dust. We were made in the image of God and that shows that we are very dear to him.
